She is Kiran Ahluwalia, Indian by birth, raised in Canada, and intensively trained in singing Gazals and Punjabi folk songs for the past 10 years. She is truly amazing: her voice is pure, her band is modern while maintaining the exotic feel of the musical color and rhythms. When I listen to her, I close my eyes and I can imagine the smell of hot, spice-filled air and beautiful sari-clad and bejeweled girls dancing. If you are looking for Far eastern music with a truly authentic, dreamy quality, she's your girl!
I hope you enjoy this gazal composed by her (her husband is playing the electric guitar):

you totally rock - I likely would never had heard of her if it hadn't been for you & I enjoyed this Gazal very much. :)
ps - thanks for the positive vibes!
wow...i too could smell the spice-filled air! i really appreciate the modern twist that they've added with the electric guitar...and i found the lyrics very poetic, and almost reminiscent to some of the scriptures in Song of Solomon. thanks for introducing us to this! :)
p.s. you and Pooch try to be on your best behavior while marble man is gone! :)
Thanks for the introduction to a wonderful musician. My husband said, "Oh, that was nice! And it isn't even Sunday!!" He's gotten used to new music coming from our Cuban in London on Sundays! ; )
I liked the jazz fusion feel of her music!
I too can smell the spice in the air...thanks so much for sharing!
hi kate! i just nominated you for the "Spreader of Love" award...you're so deserving! details are over at my blog...
:)
oooooooooooooooh I am totally falling for her music too!
I am so into India right now, so this was perfect, thanks for sharing!
I love world music..it's something Ive been listening to more than rock. That being said I am not familiar with individual Indian musicians and am glad I have something to add to my music collection. Which , other than the Monsoon Wedding soundtrack, is sadly lacking in Indian music. I agree with you about how that music can take you away to another place. Fantastic! Thanks Kate~
